Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi has suffered a broken right leg in an enduro crash today.
Rossi was taken to hospital in Urbino for displaced fracture to the tibia and fibula of the right leg, the same he injured at Mugello in 2010.
The rider’s management have confirmed to BSN’s Maria Guidotti that he will be operated on later tonight or tomorrow and it means he misses at least two GPs, including his home round at Misano next weekend. It also puts paid to any chance he has of winning the 2017 world championship.
It is the first time since The Doctor’s huge crash at Casanova/Savelli seven years ago - which ended with a displaced and exposed right tibial fracture - that he has sustained any kind of serious injury, even though he trains on dirtbikes regularly. He was taken to hospital just before this year’s Mugello round after a motocross crash which saw him escape with heavy bruising. He was still able to finish fourth.
Update: Yamaha have now issued an official confirmation of the above.
