Deniz Oncu was able to comfortably rely on his fastest lap time from the morning Practice 1 session as he led the way on Friday ahead of the Spanish Moto3 at Jerez.
With unseasonably hot spring temperatures doing their bit to rein in the riders at the height of the day in P2, only a handful managed to improve their lap times in the afternoon.
It meant Oncu's searing lap of 1m 46.173secs on the Red Bull KTM Ajo stood as the clear benchmark, some four tenths up on the opposition as headed by Jaume Masia, while championship leader Daniel Holgado got his weekend off to a positive start in third.
Ironically, the biggest movers in the P2 session were the three Japanese riders that all inflicted significant damage to their bikes in separate but identical-looking accidents at Turn 11.
Kaito Toba was the first to hit the deck less than ten minutes into the session, followed just moments later by Tatsuki Suzuki, the Leopard Racing rider lucky to get back to his feet having suffered injuries in a huge high-side last time out at COTA.
Just two minutes later, title contender Ayumu Sasaki was also down due to a low-side at the fast right-hander with his crash sending the Husqvarna IntactGP barrelling through the gravel and prompting a red flag to clear debris from the track.
Remarkably, all three riders made it back on track and bucked the trend by posting improvements, with Sasaki rising from fifth to fourth on his return to circuit, Toba going from 12th to 11th and Suzuki rising from 23rd to 13th at the flag.
Back in the top six, José Antonio Rueda was fifth fastest from COTA winner Iván Ortolá in sixth, while Xavier Artigas, Andre Migno, Filippo Fairoli and championship contender Diogo Moreira rounded out the top ten.
Of the Brits, Scott Ogden held 14th after P1 but would end his day 18th, while Joshua Whatley endured a troubled day, pinned down in 29th and last in both sessions.
