'We were able to go fast in minute one' - Joan Mir was satisfied with his Friday performance in Sepang

Joan Mir completed a positive opening day of Practice on Friday at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit.

The opening day at the Malaysian Grand Prix was positive for the Honda HRC Castrol squad as Joan Mir secured an automatic Q2 spot, but also ended the day inside the top five.

Mir was able to be fast from the moment Free Practice One began on Friday morning, but he knows he still has work to do over race distance before the Sprint Race on Saturday and the Grand Prix on Sunday.

"It was a good day, a day without many problems," Mir said to MotoGP.com after the Friday afternoon Practice session.

"We were able to go fast in minute one of Free Practice One, which makes our lives very easy. Because we just adjusted the bike for the conditions at the time. Every time we were out on track, we were able to improve.

"But there are still some questions around tyres, like which is better if the soft can reach race distance, we need to work a little bit more on the race pace side. But the important thing is that when everyone pushed, we were there at the front."

When questioned about his race pace worries, Mir admitted he has no one issue; he just does not know which tyre to use for the races this weekend.

"We are not struggling at one point in particular," he explained.

"We have to understand if we can complete the race without having a huge drop on the rear tyre, and also the front. We don't know how the bike will react after ten, twelve, or fifteen laps, so that is an important thing for us to understand tomorrow."
