The 2024 Argentina MotoGP has been cancelled, the FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports have confirmed.
The event, held at Termas de Rio Hondo, had been due to host Round 3 of the 2024 MotoGP season in April, but will now not take place in the wake of a new government administration being sworn and the subsequent stirring of unrest that has occurred.
“The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports confirm the cancellation of the 2024 Argentina GP.
“Due to the current circumstances in Argentina, the Promoter of the event has communicated that it is currently unable to guarantee the services required for the Grand Prix to take place in 2024 at MotoGP standards.”
With Dorna stating it is hoping to return to Argentina in 2025, it also confirmed that it will not replace the event and will instead make do with 21 events (42 races, including Sprint Races) instead.
“This event will not be replaced on the 2024 calendar. MotoGP hopes to return to race at Termas de Rio Hondo in 2025.”
Termas de Rio Hondo - located in north central Argentina - has played host to the Argentina MotoGP each year since 2014, save for two years in 2020 and 2021 during COVID-19.
It was the first circuit to host a round of the Grand Prix Motorcycling World Championship since 1998 when the Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez in Buenos Aires dropped off the schedule.
Even with 21 rounds, the 2024 MotoGP season will still be a record for events, following the inclusion of the Kazakhstan MotoGP (held over from 2023) and the return to the Aragon MotoGP at Motorland Aragon.
Though MotoGP does have a reserve venue to utilise in these instances - the new Balaton Park Circuit in Hungary - it has chosen not to include it on the schedule for now.
