Results from the Sprint race at the 2026 MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.
Jorge Martin converted pole to victory in the MotoGP Sprint at the Red Bull Ring, beating Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi.
On paper it looks like a straightforward win for the 2024 champion, but the reality was much different. He was first to turn one, but ran wide on the exit. Marc Marquez took advantage at turn two and ran Martin out of road, dropping the Aprilia rider to eighth.
From there, Martin was ruthless, making pass after pass at turn one: first Francesco Bagnaia, then Ai Ogura, Alex Marquez, Marco Bezzecchi, and Marc Marquez all fell victim to Martin at the first corner.
After Martin had recovered the positions he lost on lap one, he was second, but inherited the lead a few laps later when Pedro Acosta crashed out at turn 2a.
Acosta had dropped to fourth at the start behind Bezzecchi, but recovered that position on the exit of the turn two chicane when Bezzecchi was held up by the Marquez-Martin incident. Marquez then ran wide at turn three which allowed Acosta into the lead.
The KTM rider built up a 2.5-second lead in the opening 10 laps of the race, but then lost the front entering the turn two chicane on lap 12. He remounted in 13th but then retired to the pits a few laps later.
Martin was then left to cruise - relatively speaking - to the finish for his second Sprint win in four events, beating Marquez by a second, while Bezzecchi was a further six-tenths back.
Ai Ogura won the battle for what turned out to be fourth over Alex Marquez who took fifth.
Francesco Bagnaia was the only rider on the first four rows of the grid to choose the medium-compound rear tyre and finished sixth, ahead of Johann Zarco, Fermin Aldeguer, and Brad Binder who took the final point in ninth. Fabio Di Giannantonio rounded out the top-10.
