WorldWCR Racer Mia Rusthen Still in Coma But Breathing Without a Ventilator

Mia Rusthen, who was competing at the inaugural WorldWCR round at Misano during the Emilia-Romagna Round of WorldSBK, remains in a coma after crashing during the inaugural WorldWCR race at Misano but is now able to breathe without the aid of a ventilator.

Rusthen crashed at turn 16 during the first race on Saturday, which brought out the red flag and eventually forced the inaugural WorldWCR race to be shifted from its late-morning slot to the end of the day.

The race was eventually won by former Moto3 racer Maria Herrera, who also won Race 2 on Sunday, but Rusthen's crash had left her with brain swelling, for which she was successfully operated on and placed in an artificial coma after being transferred to Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Italy.

The Norwegian rider remained in the Italian hospital for around a week before being transported to her home country and the Neurointensive Ullevål intensive care unit. She remains there now and remains in a coma, but a recent update from Rusthen's family has confirmed that her condition is improving and that she has been taken off the ventilator.

The update reads: "We in Mia's family want to thank again for the warm support and greetings that continue to get to Mia and us.

"We also want to provide important clarification about Mia's health situation [...]. Mia is off the ventilator and is breathing on her own. She is showing us signs of consciousness, but it will take time to wake up. We don't know how long it will take, but she's still fighting like a hero. Mia keeps moving forward."
