Quartararo is focused on the 2024 Yamaha rather than the development of a V4 engine

Gold and Goose

Fabio Quartararo insists that he is solely focused on improving the 2024 Yamaha M1 rather than looking to the future.

Fabio Quartararo is 'not really focussed' on the development of Yamaha's V4 MotoGP engine. Instead, the French rider is looking to continue his recent form on the 2024 Yamaha M1.

Across the last three Grands Prix Quartararo has featured in Q2 and inside the top seven, something Yamaha was struggling to do at the start of the season. These achievements may seem small but it is a noticeable step from where they were at the start of the 2024 season.

Before this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix, the Yamaha riders visited the Iwata factory to speak to the engineers. Quartararo insists that he is more focused on the new chassis Yamaha has for this weekend than the V4 engine that is in development.

“No, I’m not really focused about this engine because now is the present,” Quartararo said when he was asked if he had spoken to Yamaha’s Japanese engineers about the V4.

“We have to give our best to feel the improvements. I think Yamaha, I think it’s the fourth different chassis in five races. So, it’s already a big thing that in the past we never used to see. And hopefully this weekend the new chassis helps with the rear grip.”

After a run of good results and Qualifying positions, Quartararo is concerned about the Japanese Grand Prix. The Motegi circuit will likely not suit the 2024 Yamaha and its newfound strong points.

“Let’s see this weekend,” he added. “Especially here there is a lot of acceleration. So, we know we miss some power, so will be pretty crucial. But let’s say, if we can get into Q2 from tomorrow it will be nice.

“I mean, we improved the braking, the edge grip a little bit on the braking, not on acceleration.

“But, I think with that much braking I hope we can be in the top 10 from Friday, it can change your weekend completely. So, I hope and I expect to be there on Friday.”
