Can Oncu set the pace on Friday morning in the opening World Supersport session of the weekend at Portimao.

After a month's break, the World Supersport Championship is back underway, and it is the Yamaha R9 that set the pace on Friday morning. Can Oncu and the Yamaha bLU cRU Evan Bros Team were the fastest in World Supersport Free Practice.

MV Agusta were Yamaha's closest rivals as they clinched second and third place in the first session. Federico Caricasulo was second on the Motozoo ME AIR Racing MV Agusta, and Bo Bendsneyder was in third on the MV Agusta Reparto Corse MV Agusta.

French rider, Lucas Mahias, was in fourth place on the GMT94 Yamaha R9, but he was 0.3 seconds slower than Oncu.

The top Ducati rider on Friday morning was the 2023 Moto3 World Champion, Jaume Masia. The Spaniard was one of the biggest surprises from the opening round at Phillip Island.

Outside of the top five was the joint Championship leader, Stefano Manzi. The Italian was in sixth place on his Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing R9.

Marcel Schroetter was the second Ducati rider in the top ten for the WRP Racing squad, the German ended the session in seventh place.

Niccolo Antonelli made his way into the top ten on Friday morning as he ended Free Practice in eighth place.

After missing the opening round of the season, Corentin Perolari and the Honda Racing World Supersport squad are up to speed at Portimao. The French rider ended the opening session of the weekend in ninth place.

Completing the top ten was Philipp Oettl, who also missed the opening round of the season. The Feel Racing World Supersport rider ended Free Practice in tenth.
