Luca Marini reacts his tyre pressure penalty at the British Grand Prix

Gold & Goose

A tyre pressure penalty saw Luca Marini drop from eighth to 15th at the end of the British Grand Prix.

Luca Marini had a positive weekend at the British Grand Prix, but his result on paper does not display what he and Honda HRC Castrol achieved.

The Italian rider narrowly missed out on points in the Sprint Race as he finished in 10th place. However, on Sunday, he was well inside the points and in the restarted race crossed the line in 8th place.

This would have been his best result of the season after consistently improving throughout the season.

However, Marini was given a tyre pressure penalty due to the pressure of his rear tyre. He admitted that his new rear tyre, which he used after the restart, did not feel the same as his original tyre.

The 27-year-old was left confused by the tyre pressure penalty and why his Michelin rear tyre was 'behaving differently'.

"I think I honestly could have done much better today," Marini said after the British Grand Prix.

"The first start, before the red flag, was unbelievable, and I was right there with the top five, but I changed the tyre when we went back to the garage, and the feeling changed even though the rear spec was the same. I lost a lot of positions on the first lap, but I made up a lot of ground after that.

"After the race we received a penalty for the pressure of the rear. As I said, the behaviour of the rear was different – it wasn’t a mistake of the team or of Michelin, it just happened. I accept the penalty because it’s the rule, it’s a shame to end a weekend like this."

Marini is now 13th in the MotoGP World Championship and is the second Honda rider in the standings as he is 20 points ahead of his teammate Joan Mir.
