Aragon Moto3, RACE Results: Munoz a GP winner at last as Quiles denied on last corner again

David Munoz has broken his long-awaited Grand Prix victory duck after denying rookie Maximo Quiles on the final corner to win the Aragon Moto3.

The Spaniard - a relative veteran of the novice Grand Prix category - waited until the last moments of the race to mount his attack, squeezing underneath his rival around the long Turn 16 left-hander before holding on in the sprint to the line.

Though disappointing for Quiles who - in only his fourth Moto3 start - was also denied victory on the final corner by Jose Antonio Rueda last time out at Silverstone, it marks a long-awaited trip to the top step for Munoz at his 58th attempt.

Munoz has long been considered a victory threat in Moto3 but nine podiums over the past three seasons amounted to his best results amid a reputation for aggressive riding that has led to numerous on-track incidents. Indeed, having come into the weekend with a run of five non-scores from seven races, his credentials remained in doubt at Aragon.

Nevertheless, it was a steely performance from Munoz who, after a punchy first few laps, supplanted himself in the lead group where he would remain for the entirety of the race.

It was no mean feat though, the front pack of ten riders remaining in close company and shuffling position right to the end.

The majority of the race would be led by points' leader Rueda, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider remaining steadfast in front for 12 of the 17 laps without ever looking like he was going to break away.

Eventually it was Luca Lunetta who stepped up to relieve Rueda of the lead on lap 12, the pass triggering a loss of momentum for Rueda that plunged him into the second-half of the top ten where he would remain to the flag.

Up front, Lunetta traded blows with Munoz and David Almansa before the trio were joined by Quiles in the final laps.

The CFMoto Aspar Team rider had shadowed Rueda during the first-half of the race but a leery moment at Turn 12 on lap eight demoted him to ninth.

Nonetheless, the teenager demonstrated exactly why he is considered a future star by muscling his way back to the front, often with some unconventional passes in the twisting parts of the Aragon lap.

His momentum took him all the way to the front by lap 13, though that too was followed immediately by some scruffy moments that betrayed his relative lack of experience.

Nevertheless, after Quiles successfully hauled himself back to the front on lap 14, he'd initiate a small breakaway that only Munoz could live with, the ensuing small gap back to third allowing the Intact GP rider some breathing room to attack the rider ahead.

Having previewed his plans with a pass into the final corner on the penultimate lap - an overtake that was reversed by Quiles at Turn 1 - Munoz stayed close to his rival down the back straight before pouncing to the inside.

To his credit, Quiles - having lost out on the Silverstone win after going too deep in defence at the final corner - didn't make the same mistake this time, but was unable to hold a tight enough line to prevent Munoz from scurrying underneath him.

Squaring it off out of the final corner, Munoz dashed to the line, taking the flag by just 0.050secs.

It makes Munoz Grand Prix racing's newest winner just two weeks after Intact GP Moto2 counterpart Senna Agius won for the first time at Silverstone.

Behind Quiles, Alvaro Carpe popped up into third place having left his charge to the podium until the final moments. The Spaniard maintained a shadowy brief behind the fight for the top three for much of the race but would benefit from Lunetta and Almansa dusting each other up in the closing stages.

As such, Almansa had to settle for fourth - his best-ever result in Moto3 - with Lunetta winding up fifth.

In the context of the 2025 Moto3 title battle, Rueda's afternoon never really recovered from being overtaken for the lead.

Dropping from first to ninth in just two laps, though Rueda got back up to fifth at one stage, a late lunge by main title rival Angel Piqueras on the final lap demoted him to eighth at the flag.

Piqueras, meanwhile, brought it home for sixth after an otherwise anonymous race, the MT Helmets-MSI rider nonetheless nibbling Rueda's overall lead down to 52 points.

Between the feuding title rivals, Joel Kelso - currently third in the standings - claimed seventh after too struggling to penetrate the lead positions despite never straying more than a second off the lead.

Ryusei Yamanaka finished ninth, ahead of Cormac Buchanan, who made strong late gains to catch the lead group but was unable to go any higher.

Taiyo Furusato ran inside the top five for long stretches before a late mistake dropped him to 11th, while British rider Scott Ogden notched up precious points in 12th.

Valentin Perrone, Ruche Moodley and Dennis Foggia nabbed the final points in 13th, 14th and 15th respectively.
