Fabio Quartararo went against his crew's advice and opted to run the medium front tyre for the Sprint Race.
Ahead of the Sprint Race at the Australian Grand Prix, Fabio Quartararo had set a new all-time MotoGP Lap Record around Phillip Island and claimed pole position for the Monster Energy Yamaha squad.
The Frenchman looked like he could contend for the top five in the Saturday Sprint Race around the iconic circuit. However, a mistake on his part cost him the chance of staying with the front runners.
Quartarao's crew advised him to use the hard front tyre for the 13-lap Sprint Race, but he decided to use the medium front tyre and found himself struggling. He was still able to score points as he finished in seventh place, but was 8.706 seconds behind race winner Marco Bezzecchi.
"I made a mistake with the front tyre," Quartararo told MotoGP.com after the Sprint Race.
"The team pushed me a lot to go with the hard, but I decided to go with the medium. But I made a mistake, you know it happens.
"Of course, our pace was great, and I think it is good information for tomorrow."
Quartararo will get another chance on Sunday as he will start from pole position on his Yamaha M1 once again. When asked about his goals for the Grand Prix, he stated that his goals will remain the same as Saturday's.
"I aiming to make a good start and race with the hard [front tyre]," he explained.
"Then we will see, during the longer race, but I think it will be important to stay with the same goals. Push really hard in the beginning, try to understand the tyres, but the hard will be super important."
