'I tried everything until the end...' - rear grip issues plagued Jake Dixon at Portimao

Gold & Goose

Rear grip issues impacted Jake Dixon's performance on Sunday at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

After winning the Malaysian Grand Prix two weeks ago, Jake Dixon was hoping to continue his winning ways at the penultimate round of the season.

The British rider headed into the Portuguese Grand Prix full of confidence, and had started his weekend in a positive way as he ended the Friday afternoon Practice session in second place.

Dixon's form continued on Saturday as he was able to qualify on the front row in second place, alongside Diogo Moreira and Collin Veijer.

However, it became clear early on in the Portuguese Grand Prix that Dixon was struggling with rear grip. After dropping out of the podium fight, the 29-year-old slipped back to seventh place, and whilst pushing to catch sixth place, he crashed on the final lap.

"We crashed out on the last lap, unfortunately. I had been pushing over the limit for a long time in that race," Dixon said.

"I really struggled. When we had grip yesterday, I was able to do the job. But it just didn’t seem to come easy then. I didn’t have the rear grip on entry or exit. Lap by lap it was getting worse, which started to cause some problems. I never gave up. I tried everything until the end.

"Unfortunately, I went defensive into Turn 3 on the last lap so the guys behind didn’t come up the inside of me and I just closed the front. That was my mistake. But this is what happens when you’re pushing at the limit.

"I’m happy overall because again I was running as the top Boscoscuro. I felt I was making the difference to the others and am extracting the most out of the package. It’s a shame how it ended, but we’ll go again in a couple of days."
