A new engine will be used to power Moto2 from the 2027 season, Triumph has announced.

The British manufacturer took over the supply of the championship from Honda in 2019, making 2027 its ninth season supplying the middleweight class.

Until 2026, the engine used has come straight from Triumph’s road line-up, with the 765cc three-cylinder engine used in Moto2 having first been developed for the Street Triple 765 production bike range.

The new engine, whose displacement has not yet been disclosed, will differ from the current one in that it has been developed primarily for Moto2, rather than being transplanted into a race chassis from a road bike.

In terms of its specification, the new engine utilises a new cylinder head, which itself featured a refreshed valvetrain, higher flow ports, and a redesigned combustion chamber.

“Triumph has also redesigned the crankcases and all internal components to cope with the additional power and torque – ensuring maximum reliability once this power unit hits the track,” the Hinckley brand says.

Triumph is reporting the new engine produces six per cent more peak power, while saving 2kg in weight compared to the current engine.

The British manufacturer has also been working with Moto2 chassis manufacturers, who will need to revise their design for the new motor, “particularly with regards to how the air intake is positioned and also the engine mounting points,” Triumph says.

“Today’s announcement marks a significant step forward in the partnership between Triumph Motorcycles and MotoGP,” said Triumph’s chief product officer Steve Sargeant.

“We have always strived to develop the Moto2 World Championship ever since we began powering the middle-weight class in 2019. We’ve introduced more power, we’ve seen gearbox changes and now we’ve introduced a brand-new, high performance race engine that will be powering the Moto2 series from 2027.

“The new engine has undergone a vigorous testing programme which has allowed us to really assess its performance, longevity and reliability, to ensure it continues to deliver the quality of racing we’ve seen over the last seven seasons. 

“Updates to the cylinders, bringing in more air, achieving higher compression ratios and more torque have all been expertly crafted and we’re really excited by the results we’ve seen. 

“We can’t wait to see it on track and watch our partnership with MotoGP and the Moto2 World Championship continue to grow over the seasons to come.”
