Factory Yamaha's Ben Spies reckons the new-spec 800cc engine both he and team-mate Jorge Lorenzo tested at Brno on Monday was not the big leap forward they both wanted but a step in the right direction.
Spies was able to better his time from qualifying using the upgraded motor but that comes as no surprise, given he has had another day on track and there is more rubber on the surface which is the normal for a test after a race weekend.
"The new engine is a step forward and hopefully we will be able to go more in that direction in the near future. As a rider you want a massive step, it isn't that but it was just to confirm the bike was going to handle the same and nothing was going to be drastically different," said the Texan.
"With nothing like the effort we put in, we were as fast as qualifying. It's confidence inspiring at least to end the rest of the season. It's got a little bit more everywhere and where we need it. We said we wanted more power everywhere and we got it. I will tell you if it is enough to hang with the Hondas at Indy."
