MotoGP Aragon: Spies leads wet free practices

Factory Yamaha's Ben Spies has topped the opening MotoGP free practice sessions at a wet Aragon but was chased hard in the second by title challenger Dani Pedrosa was was only 0.066s behind the American.

Spies lapped in 2'00.219 compared to Pedrosa's 2'00.285. Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo was also in the fight for top spot but slipped back to third place and is half a second off the pace of his Yamaha team-mate.

Ducati's Nicky Hayden took advantage of the fact wet conditions are slightly easier on his injured hand, bagging fourth but a further quarter of a second behind Lorenzo. Andrea Dovizioso hopped up to fifth with his last lap of the session to demote rookie Stefan Bradl while Britain's Cal Crutchlow was seventh and 1.4s off the pace.

Valentino Rossi will be disappointed to be down in eighth and more than two seconds in arrears while Jonathan Rea lost another session to the rain and will be praying for a dry free practice tomorrow. He finished in 11th and the last of the prototypes.

Randy De Puniet was fastest of the CRT entries with Aleix Espargaro and James Ellison behind him.
