Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez says he has no answers as to why he is a full second faster than the chasing pack on the opening day of MotoGP practice at Austin and even his team have asked him the same question.
The Repsol Honda wunderkind outpaced everyone by more than a second using the hard-option Bridgestone while Andrea Dovizioso had to sling in the Open class soft tyre in order to get to a second behind.
“It is a great surprise, you never expect to be first plus one second, you expect to be in the first positions but not to have that advantage. In a way I feel good, we have a good base setup, we are quite correct but I think the others will catch up tomorrow,” said Marquez, speaking at Austin.
Marquez put in seven laps that were faster than anyone else in the second session today and said that he has tried various setup options and is quick with all of them.
“I don’t know why I am so fast, my technician asked me the same question. We test something on the setup in harder and softer and with both I am fast so I don’t know why this track, I do like it.
“My leg is only a little bit problem for turns one and two. Today I ride without painkillers and was great. Tomorrow we will see what happens.”
