Camier retained as Aspar Honda MotoGP reserve rider

Britain’s Leon Camier has been retained as reserve rider for the Drive M7 Aspar Honda MotoGP squad and will be on call to replace either Nicky Hayden or Hiro Aoyama should the need arise.

The former British Superbike Champion was on hand at the Catalan round in case Hayden’s wrist, which was operated on just ten days before the Spanish race, proved too much of an obstacle to the American.

In the end, Camier wasn’t needed but the team have kept him on just in case. Camier is without a full-time ride for the rest of 2014 but says that he won’t be jumping into anything to race just for the sake of it.

“If I am going to race this year, it needs to be on the right package which is competitive and has a good team around it. I have had offers from World Superbikes, the IDM in Germany and in Britain, but it needs to be right,” said Camier, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“Otherwise I will continue to be on call for the Aspar team and work on securing a good ride on the world stage in 2015. It would be great if I do get the opportunity in MotoGP but it seems that Nicky’s wrist is ok and that is obviously best for the team.”
