Not content with laying waste to the MotoGP record book so far, Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez could match Mick Doohan’s 12 wins in a season record at this weekend’s Misano round.
The reigning champion and runaway series leader is well on course for his second title in a row and could wrap it up at Motegi if he wins the next two races, which would break Doohan’s tally set in 1997.
Doohan was victorious at Shah Alam, Suzuka, Mugello, A1 Ring, Paul Ricard, Assen, Imola, Nurburgring, Circuit Nelson Piquet, Donington, Brno and Barcelona, leaving team-mate Alex Criville to mop up at Phillip Island and Jerez, while Tady Okada won at Sentul.
Honda won every race that year with Doohan finishing off the podium only once in Australia, when he crashed early on, and ended the season a whopping 143 points ahead of Okada.
