MotoGP Misano: Kerb crawling costs champion Marquez

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez threw away a potentially record-equalling 12th victory at Misano today when he crossed a kerb too far and crashed with 19 laps to go, leaving hometown hero Valentino Rossi to take an unchallenged win.

Marquez went down after he had already had traded paint with The Doctor three times and it looked like he could hang with Movistar Yamaha’s blistering pace until he lost the front after going too far into the kerb. The Repsol Honda man re-mounted and made his way through to 15th from dead last, denying Britain’s Leon Camier a chamnpionship point.

“I am disappointed for the crash but it is completely my fault. I was really happy during the race in the first laps because yesterday I was not able to be in the same rhythm as the Yamahas but in warm-up we improve and were able to follow them,” said Marquez, speaking at Misano.

“When I was behind Valentino, just as I cool down a little and try to relax I do a stupid mistake. I go too in on the corner, touch the kerb inside and on that corner it is not possible and then I lose the front. We take the bike, we take one point as you never know what will happen in the future.”
