Team Sky VR46 rider Romana Fenati scrapped his way from 13th on the grid to take victory in this morning’s MotoGP Moto3 race at Motorland Aragon, edging out Alex Marquez on the last lap while Britain’s Danny Kent took the last podium spot.
It was disaster, however, for both series leader Jack Miller and Scotland’s John McPhee, who both crashed twice. The Australian Red Bull KTM rider was the loser in a pushing contest with Alex Marquez into the fast left-hander off the back straight and went down.
Miller re-mounted in last place but then crashed again on the penultimate lap. He did finish but lost his series lead to Honda’s Marquez who now enjoys an 11-point advantage going into the Motegi round, a track where Miller has said he should be strong.
McPhee, meanwhile, had been sitting in fourth place but crashed at turn 14 after Marquez ran wide and pushed the Oban rider onto the wet part of the track and McPhee’s wet rear slick just lost grip. He re-mounted but crashed again and that put paid to his challenge for points.
At the front, Marquez was in a fight with team-mate Rins and Kent but the British man made an error and dropped back down the field. He got stuck in behind Fenati and allowed the little Italian to tow him back up to the leaders while Rins ran wide and ended up just off the podium, 11 seconds behind the winner.
Kent used a lot of his rear tyre in the charge back up to the leaders and just didn’t have an answer to the last lap pace of Fenati and Marquez, who trailed the Italian by on 0.057s across the line.
Miller and Marquez were summoned to race direction to discuss their clash but it was deemed a racing incident.
