MotoGP Brno: Marquez finishes Friday on top after spectacular save

Former MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez recovered from massive moment at the start of today’s second free practice session at Brno where he lost the front and rear at turn 13 to set the fastest lap of the day.

Marquez all but crashed the RC213V as he started to get back on the gas mid-corner hauled the Repsol Honda back up on his knee and elbow - similar to a near-crash he had at the Czech circuit last year - and came back to find a pile of pace to top the timesheets with a 1’55.840.

The Spaniard was a tenth of a second quicker than this morning’s fastest man Andrea Iannone, who put on a new soft rear right at session end to record a 1’55.944. Reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo finished in third place with a 1’55.972 while Hector Barbera got a tow from Dani Pedrosa to bag fourth on with a 1’56.110.

Barbera’s lap was just good enough to push Valentino Rossi’s Movistar Yamaha back to fifth place on a 1’56.174 with Andrea Dovisioso putting his works Ducati into sixth as Aleix Espargaro nicked seventh place.

Bradley Smith benefitted from lapping behind Lorenzo to take eighth place, just ahead of Maverick Vinales with Pedrosa completing the top ten. Cal Crutchlow took 11th while Loriz Baz hauled himself into 12th place with five minutes left of the session.
