Britain’s Scott Redding took a gamble with the soft-compound Michelin wet in yesterday’s MotoGP qualifying session at Termas de Rio Hondo but it backfired on the Octo Ducati man as he couldn’t find the grip or pace to make it out of qualifying one.
After a successful free practices yesterday, Redding had to fight his way through qualifying one after not making the cut but got impatient with the medium rear and changed to a soft but quickly realised it was the wrong decision. However, Redding believes he has the pace for top ten if it says dry in Argentina today.
“A good day. Just a little bit difficult. The positive was FP3 was strong. We weren't sure which tyres to go for but we finalised that. To finalise that was really positive. That was our main job for today, to go into Q2 but with these conditions it just made it even fucking harder. We tried,” said Redding, speaking at the track.
“In FP4 we was quite strong and fastest a couple of times. But the tyre temperature just kept going through the roof. It was locking - I couldn't stop. In qualifying, I thought it would be good to get in behind somebody. Dani was stronger than me in FP4 but I was behind him and he was holding me up. I did one lap behind him.
“Then on the second lap I thought it wasn’t working. I was a little impatient. I was going to hold back and then do another lap and see. I knew Lorenzo was on the soft tyre and I saw on the TV screen he was top three and thought maybe that was the way to go.
“I pulled in at the last moment and put the soft tyre in. On the out lap I felt like I was already on the limit. For the feeling I had I did a good lap time and put everything together really well. It just wasn't enough.
“I think if I kept the medium we had the potential to go through to Q2. But I took a gamble. It could have paid off and I could have been super fast. Unfortunately it didn't and it started to rain more. I think tomorrow the beginning of the race is going to be a bit slower than normal.
“So if I can be strong at the beginning I think I can recover a few positions. I feel good with the front I've got a good race combination. I’m happy to go with that straight out the box. I feel like I have the pace to finish in the top ten.”
