THRUXTON BSB: RIDERS REVIEWS

VISK BRITISH SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP
Graham Gowland – Motorpoint Henderson’s Yamaha (Q=15th, R1=12th, R2=13th)
"That was the hardest I have ever worked for a result like that, I have only ridden here once and that was on a 600cc road bike! We did not get a setting that could cope with the bumps and lack of grip around this track, pretty frustrating as I am getting fitter now and want to step up. A couple of weekends off will help me and the team have time to work on the bike"
Chris Walker – Motorpoint Henderson’s Yamaha (Q=13th, R1=DNF, R2=DNF)
"Lets hope that's my bogey weekend out of the way, I have never had the best luck at Thruxton but this weekend was a joke! We struggled for a set up for qualifying but I knew I'd battle for a result on race day, to leave here without even having a go is really hard to take. People know I am a fighter and we will work hard to make up for this disappointment"
Peter Hickman – Ultimate Racing (Q=18t, R1=16th, R2=15th)
“We struggled a bit all weekend with set up and not being able to make the tyre last the distance, I wasn’t really where I wanted to be on the grid. I made a cracking start to race one but someone made a mistake ahead of me and I had to run wide losing a lot of ground. The same thing happened again at the first chicane so I ended up down in 23rd place for a while.
“But I managed to get back up to third in the cup and 16th overall so not too bad a result in the circumstances.  I didn’t get the best of starts to the second race and nearly stalled the bike on the line. But once we got going it was a good race for me, I wasn’t too far away from the group ahead and if I had another couple of laps I could perhaps have moved further forward.”
Tom Tunstall – Hardinge Doodson Motorsport (Q=18th, R1=DNF, R2=DNS)
“I definitely had the pace to make it two 2nd places today but lost too much time getting boxed out in turn one. I’m really happy with the progress the whole team is making and my confidence on the bike is still growing.”
“Race one proved that with we have the pace to run with some of the established superbike teams and riders.  If we can keep this progress going it certainly bodes well for the rest of the season”

David Johnson – Team Maxxis – Adept Yamaha (Q=19th, R1=DNF, R2=14th)
On Friday I felt great, everything was flowing, it felt really good.  To be robbed of a row three or four  qualifying time on Saturday and then finish today in P18 for Race one and a DNF in Race two, is no justice after all the hard work we have put in this weekend. I would like to thank the team for their positive attitude and tireless professionalism throughout this round.  Being down on our luck has been tough, but I know we are developing, and improving the bike for each round. We only need to ‘click’ and I know we will start to produce the results both the team and I are capable of.

Lee Johnston – MAP Raceways Yamaha (Q=12th,R=9th)
“I was lucky to get away with that one and I hope Dennis Hobbs is ok. He high-sided in the middle of turn one and I hit his bike. I’ve hurt my right wrist and ankle but I had to get out there and race. I got a top ten which was my aim but now the adrenalin has worn off so I'm starting to feel sore. I hope to be fully fit for Snetterton as I want more top tens.”
Allan Jon Venter – MAP Raceways Yamaha (Q=19th, R=16th)
“It was a good race and I got away better on the re-start. I saw Lee’s crash and I’m amazed he was able to get back out in the second part. I got a little tangled up with about five guys which was good fun but I was just running out of strength at the end. I will be back to full fitness by Snetterton so I’m looking forward to that. I want to say thanks to MAP Group and to all my sponsors and to Dr Toby Branfoot who looked after me at Donington Park last weekend.”
Dan Linfoot – NW200 Coca Cola Zero (Q=6th, R=3rd)
"That was great fun, I would love to have won but it was one of those races where being right in the thick of it was such a buzz and I can't stop smiling! All the bikes were sliding and it was a pretty wild around the back section, slipstreaming played a huge part and rubbing shoulders with the boys at 150mph was a bit scary"
Daniel Cooper – Centurion Racing (Q=9th, R=14th)
“I'm so gutted about the jump start, the lights seemed to be held for ages, I started creeping so I pulled the clutch in, which really didn't gain me any advantage as all the riders came past me. I was really angry at myself when I saw the ride through board come out, I had just got myself into third place.”
“I lost a shed load of places and was pretty frustrated when I went back out on track, I just wanted to make up as many positions as possible and got my head down, I knew my lap times were good and just had to work hard. I'm glad I managed to salvage some points and the bike felt mega throughout the race and very solid, which was great. I just hope things will go a bit better at Snetterton as my times would have easily let me run at the front with the leaders. We have a few weeks off now and I'm already looking forward to Snetterton."
Tom Grant – Centurion Racing (Q=7th, R=11th)
"I just don't know what the problem was, I had major problems over the weekend with my right arm and I really need to see where the problem is coming from and if anything can be done about it. During the race I just struggled with the set up on the bike, it was moving around a lot and not sure why. I just wanted to get a good finish here as it's my local round but really need to get it together for Snetterton in a couple of weeks time."
METZELER NATIONAL SUPERSTOCK 600
Josh Wainwright – Linxcel-Seton Tuning (Q=23rd, R=23rd)
“It was all going really well for me, right up to the actual race.  Friday was the first time I’d even seen the Thruxton circuit, but right from the beginning I felt I was setting a good pace.  Then we had the bad luck of the accident on the start line and I was unable to regain my original position.  I’m looking forward to Snetterton though as I’ve been there quite a few times”.
Nick Clark – Linxcel-Seton Tuning (Q=21st, R=14th)
“It was a difficult weekend, I didn’t get that comfortable on the bike and the qualifying was a lot lower than I’d hoped.  We managed to find a better set up in warm up which resulted in me being able to make up as many place in the race.
“I was only 0.03 seconds lap slower than the leader.  We improved, all be it a little bit late.  I'm really looking forward to getting back on the bike and I’m looking to improve on the qualifying to give a better shot for the race.”
Nikki Coates – MAP Racesways Junior Team (Q=11th, R=7th)
“That was a lot better this weekend. I could have done with a few more laps as I know I could have moved even further forward. My lap times were the same as the race leaders so it was a shame the Safety Car had to come out. I do feel a lot more confident now I’ve got a good result under my belt. I can’t wait to get on track at Snetterton now.”
Cody Nally – MAP Racesways Junior Team (Q=33rd, R=DNF)
“I went to turn in and just got hit from behind, I did try to re-start but my handle bars were twisted. I’m hoping for some better luck next time.”
Mike McClean – MAP Racesways Junior Team (Q=24th, R=DNF)
“I was hit during the big crash but I didn’t go down. The impact obviously damaged my bike and it just wouldn’t start. It’s a shame to have a race cut so short when everything else had gone well all weekend. I just need to look to Snetterton now.”
Luke Jones – MAP Racesways Junior Team (Q=3rd, R=3rd)
“I had a really good battle and I enjoyed the race. I think I pushed too soon on the fast section and wore out my tyre. I’m happy to be on the podium as it is more points for me. I also feel more confident now too which is good. I didn’t see the big crash as I had got away well but sitting behind the Safety Car is distracting. I can’t wait to get to Snetterton as my confidence is up.”
Jack Groves – Team Harbio Starmix (Q=20th,R=13th)
“As the tarmac was hot, I took it steady on the warm-up lap to save the tyres.  I got a great start and managed to miss all the carnage into turn one, but the Safety Car was out now for two laps.  As soon as the safety car went in, there was yet another crash; I saw the Yellow (no overtaking) flags as I came out of Church Corner, so I rolled off.”
“But three riders behind me hadn’t see the flag in time; they overtook me.  Two of them soon realised and slipped back to their proper placing while the flag was still out.  The safety car was out again; no overtaking for yet another lap.  When the car finally went in I was now part of a 22-wheel freight train, from 4th to 14th.  I moved up to 13th, and I could have done more - if only the race hadn’t ended.  Thanks to Team HARIBO Starmix; thank you for all your hard work throughout the weekend; and thanks too to Mark; I’ve had a great weekend.”
Johnny Blackshaw – Team Haribo Starmix (Q=31st,R=DNF)
“I got a good start and headed into the first corner determined to make up ground, but someone from the front two rows crashed causing everyone behind to back up.  I ran up the back of one of the bikes; I didn’t know that it had bent my front brake disk; the dished disk was now pushing the front brake pads away ie. back into the calliper, such that they would need to be double-pumped to ever get them to even touch the disk.  It was only as I went flying into the next corner complex that I realised I had no brakes; the front brake lever simply came right up to the bar, nothing there.
So I now locked the back wheel with my footbrake; but that desperate move meant that I was off line; I took out one of my racing friends as I struggled to retain control of the bike.   We both went down.   Luckily he was okay.   I suffered from some internal bleeding but was really just battered & bruised, with a few cuts and grazes.  My bike set up was brilliant and by the time we get to BSB Snetterton, my shoulder should be good and ready too.”
METZELER NATIONAL SUPERSTOCK 1000
Bruce Wilson – Sorrymate.com/Team Co-Ordit (Q=27th, R=DNF)
“That was another great weekend, despite crashing out on the last lap of the race. The whole team worked really hard to get the bike handling, and their efforts paid off as I moved up six placesin the race from my qualifying position. We went faster every session, and I can’t wait for the next round.  Co-ordit are really getting me back on track.”
RELENTLESS BRITISH 125GP CHAMPIONSHIP
Brian Clark –  Banks Racing/Express Racewear (Q=11th, R=1st)
‘That was awesome, it was tooth and nail all the way and to still be there at the end is a huge credit to us. Pete & Stephen gave me the best machine they could and I just rode like I know I can and finally it seems like a little bit of luck came our way. I’m glad Martin (Glossop) didn’t hurt himself but I can’t hide how happy I am today. Chris at Xpress Racewear has been so supportive and hopefully this is the start of me repaying his belief in me, without him we’d not be on the grid.”
“Also a big big thanks to all that have helped me to get here. As I’m not yet 100% fit nor are we to full strength as a team, there’s more to come from us, watch this space! From these results and the fantastic coverage on the Eurosport programs hopefully we can convert this into more support to try and bridge the gap to the KRP team and the others.”
KTM RC8 SUPER CUP
Ritchie Thornton – TA Creative Ltd/P&H Motorcycles (Q=18th, R=15th)
“I’ve never raced here before, I didn’t know what to expect, it’s a place where you need to wind it on full throttle, not easy when you don’t know your way round. I just followed some of the more experienced riders in practice to get a feel for the place.  Unfortunately, we don’t get as much practice time as the other classes here so you have to make the most of every second.
“I got a good start from row five and got behind Fagan at the first corner and thought once behind him I’d be well away. I don’t know what happened next, but he just seemed to stop going forwards and I had to roll off to avoid hitting him. It was enough to drop me back again to 18th.

It was a great race in the end, I really enjoyed it.  The bike felt great and to break the 100mph average speed barrier was a real achievement when I have never been here before. I would like to say thanks Andy White at KAIS Performance for helping me sort the bike out. I am really looking forward to the next round now.”
