Dall’Igna remaining realistic after Mugello MotoGP success

Ducati technical chief Gigi Dall’Igna is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite a win for the factory at MotoGP Mugello, and will approach Catalunya this weekend and the rest of the season with a calm and methodical attitude.

Andrea Dovizioso’s victory in front of the Italian crowd at Ducati’s home GP was the accomplishment of the dream of every Italian rider and a big relief for the Italian manufacturer.

With Dovizioso and Danilo Petrucci respectively on the first and third spots of the podium and Bautista in the top five, Dall’Igna – the father of the GP17 – had confirmation of the correct direction.

For him is the third success since he joined Ducati. With Lorenzo’s podium in Jerez and Dovi’s victory in Mugello, Ducati could start dreaming, but the Dall’Igna prefers to remain realistic:

Mugello can be the turning point of the 2017 season?
“Winning at Mugello is fantastic, but we need to stay calm and continue to work with this method. For sure this victory will give Dovizioso extra motivation but it can be a good boost also for Lorenzo, something to think about.”

What is the easiest mistake to make in these situations?
“When results are not coming is easy to make confusion. This is the worst thing to do. It is important to say calm and keep on working.”

Did you expect this victory?
“We had done a private test here at Mugello with the factory riders and Michele Pirro to prepare for the race.  he test session was positive but during a test you are alone so you cannot understand how strong you are as we don’t have the reference of the other riders. Anyway, I’m always optimistic.”

Petrucci also got a great result and Bautista finished fith. Is the GP17 a winning bike?
“In these years we have done several important steps forward to adapt the Desmosedici to the different situations and the different riding styles. I think we have done a good job but there is still a lot of work to do. We are still not where I would like to be and we know how competitive our rivals are.”

Lorenzo said that this bike requires a completely different riding style and that after Austin the bike hasn’t changed. Some new parts will come soon?
“During the season you cannot make drastic changes. Of course there is a development plan that has been slightly changed as this first part of the season has not been as we expected. Lorenzo has never been in doubt. We know his talent. He is five-time world champion. We need to give him a bike that suits him.”

Dovizioso is second in the world standing. Are you thinking about the championship?
“I don’t want to think the championship. The next target is to do well in Barcelona and I don’t know if we will be able to repeat the performance of Mugello. In a way the two layouts have some similarities but at Montmelo the level of grip is lower.”

What is the next step after this victory?
“The best thing is do as nothing happened and keep on working as we have done so far.”

When we will see the new fairing?
“We are working on it, I think we could introduce something different in the second part of the season.”
