Fernandez fractures thumb, surgery succesful

Augusto Fernandez’ new Red Bull KTM Ajo adventure took a dent on Thursday after a training accident sent the Spaniard to surgery.

Fernandez departed Elf Marc VDS in favour of Aki Ajo’s successful Moto2 project and a step on the Red Bull KTM ladder for 2022, however, the 24-year-old’s preparation took a step back this week. A crash on Thursday during a training session incurred an extra-articular fracture to the first metacarpal of his left thumb, requiring surgery.

As expected, Dr. Xavier Mir, Director of the Hand, Elbow and Microsurgery Surgery Unit (ICATME), together with his team at the Hospital Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona, completed the operation successfully on Friday morning. Fernandez will remain at the hospital for the next 24 hours, with a functional recovery programme expected to begin within 72 hours.

“Yesterday, while training, I suffered a fall and suffered an extra-articular fracture in the first metacarpal of the left thumb,” Fernandez said on social media.

“I want to thank Dr. Mir and his entire team for the operation and amazing work as always. Looking forward to starting the recovery!”
