After two years of competing in MotoGP, Augusto Fernandez is set to become a Yamaha Test Rider.
Augusto Fernandez is entering his final two rounds as a full-time MotoGP rider for the Red Bull KTM GasGas Factory Racing Team.
After a positive rookie season in MotoGP, the Spaniard has struggled in his second year in the class. However, with no rides available on the 2025 MotoGP grid Fernandez's future is yet to be confirmed.
For months rumours have placed Fernandez at Yamaha as their new Test Rider, but nothing has been announced. There had been thoughts that Fernandez's new deal could have been hijacked after Andrea Dovizioso took part in private tests with Yamaha.
But at Sepang, Fernandez seemed positive that he would be with the Japanese manufacturer next season.
“I don't know if I can confirm it," Fernandez said when asked about his 2025 plans.
"We are missing the last piece, but it looks like I'm going to be riding the Yamaha as a test rider. As I said, missing the confirmation, but we are very, very, very close to it, I'm gonna be there.”
Fernandez also believes that he will switch from the KTM RC16 to the Yamaha M1 as soon as the end of 2024.
“We don't know if we are going to race at Valencia, but the Valencia test will be hard," said Fernandez. "It's something that I've been asking for because it's important to jump straight away from the KTM to Yamaha to see the difference.
“But Yamaha have a lot of work also with the Pramac team, so it will be difficult. But before the year ends, I will have a test. Maybe not in Valencia, but another track. And then I’ll be back here very soon.”
