Moto3 USA | No change at damp COTA, Sasaki leads into Q2

Ayumu Sasaki held onto his No.1 spot heading into Qualifying for the 2023 Moto3 Grand Prix of The Americas as sketchy conditions in P3 prevented riders from making an impression on their P2 personal best laps.

Though rain from earlier had cleared well in advance of the first GP track session of Saturday at  Circuit of The Americas, patches of damp at various locations on the circuit would ultimately prevent riders from making gains.

As such, Sasaki’s leading time from P2 remained the benchmark to the end of the three Moto3 sessions, the IntactGP Husqvarna rider bidding to make it three pole positions in a row later today.

Jaume Masia and Ivan Ortola completed the unchanged top three, ahead of Diogo Moreira, who emerged fastest of the P3 session itself, albeit almost two seconds down on the ultimate best lap of the weekend.

Daniel Holgado and Kaito Toba rounded out the top six, with the top ten completed by Deniz Oncu, Tatsuki Suzuki, David Munoz and Romano Fenati.

The damp conditions also meant that the Top 14 riders from P2 go through to Q2 automatically, among them Matteo Bertelle, Jose Antonio Rueda, Stefano Nepa and Riccardo Rossi.

Those who will look to advance from Q1 include British rider Scott Ogden, the VisionTrack Honda man having been third quickest in P3 itself, his team-mate Josh Whatley and Moto3 podium winner Xavier Artigas on the CFMoto.
