Fabio Quartararo bounced back from a massive crash in MotoGP free practice three to snatch pole position away from 2021 team-mate Maverick Vinales with his last lap.
Vinales had put in two fast laps to claim top spot in qualifying but Quartararo banged in a 1’47.066 to eclipse Vinales’ best of 1’47.122. Britain’s Cal Crutchlow bagged the final front-row spot with his last effort.
The British rider was only 0.012s ahead of Franco Morbidelli which prevented a Yamaha clean sweep of the front row while Jack Miller in fifth came through qualifying one.
Suzuki’s Joan Mir finalised the second row with a 1’47.679 with Taka Nakagami putting in another great performance in seventh.
Danilo Petrucci came through Q1 with Miller but couldn’t find the same pace as the Australian, finishing in eighth with a 1’47.924.
Aleix Espargaro took ninth with Alex Rins tenth, Alex Marquez 11th and Pol Espargaro, looking like he had a technical problem on his final lap, in 12th.
Andrea Dovizioso's title hopes took a massive hit as he failed to make it out of Q1 and has to start in 13th place tomorrow.
Brad Binder and Iker Lecuona's KTMs trail the veteran Ducati rider with Johann Zarco, Pecco Bagnaia and Miguel Oliveira next along.
