MotoGP Aragon: 'We really needed that race' - Laverty

PBM Aprilia's Michael Laverty has expressed his disappointment at being wiped out by the errant Danilo Petrucci in the early stages of yesterday Aragon MotoGP round after making signifcant progress all weekend.

The Irishman, who had Scott Smart as his new crew chief for the first time, was back on the ART he had only ridden once this year and managed to knock the business end of four seconds off his laptime from Friday practice to qualifying.

A great start saw him up to 17th and getting in among the likes of Colin Edwards and Randy De Puniet, but Petrucci got it all wrong on the entrance to the complex before the back straight, locked his front wheel and collected Laverty.

"It is disappointing because we really needed that race to confirm everything we had worked on all weekend. Petrucci didn't come and apologise to me, he just got on a taxibike and cleared off back to the paddock, which was a little rude," said Laverty, speaking to bikesportnews.com this afternoon.

"I had got a great start and was where I needed to be. We had the pace to beat the FTRs and run the same laptimes as Colin. Espargaro wasn't that far away either so it all bodes well for Sepang.

"Going to Malaysia will be good as it will be the first MotoGP track I have experience of and have data for, as I rode the ART there in the first test, and put in some good times, so at least on the Friday we can get straight down to it instead of working out which way it goes.

"Scott did some really good work and he is certainly clever enough for this job. He made some good chassis changes which made me more comfortable on the bike, so that was a big bonus."
