MotoGP Assen: Lorenzo to undergo surgery on broken collarbone

Factory Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo will be kept in hospital overnight and then fly to Barcelona tomorrow where he will undergo surgery on the collarbone he broke in free practice this afternoon.

The reigning world champion will go under the knife on either Saturday or Sunday at the Dexeus Institute depending on the results of a CAT scan, and will be supervised by Dr Xavier Mir.

How long the Spaniard will be out of action for is still unclear but MotoGP has three races in the space of the next four weekends, so it is a possible 75-point loss should he be out of action until after the Laguna Seca round.

“Jorge has suffered an accident at over 200 kilometres an hour and the obvious injury at this point is a broken left clavicle. However, as this was a significant accident, we have to take into account that there could also be head, thoracic or abdominal injuries," said Dr Mir.

"For now, we have taken him to hospital in Assen where CT scans will be carried out in those three areas to rule out any further injuries. It would also be a prudent move to observe him over 12 hours to make sure he can be treated by the appropriate parties when he arrives in Barcelona tomorrow.”
