MotoGP Austria: Mir bags seventh win of the season

Leopard Racing’s Joan Mir bagged another 25-point haul to aid his quest for the 2017 Moto3 world title today at the Red Bull Ring MotoGP round, coming from tenth to the lead in six laps and then cruising away to take the chequered flag a little more than three seconds.

There was no stopping the Spaniard, who is now on a hat-trick of victories, and his championship aspirations were helped by Aron Canet finishing in fifth place after a late charge pulled him back through the pack and Romano Fenati having a disaster.

The Rivacold Snipers riders ran off-track at turn one early on and despite a fight back, could only muster 13th place which means Mir increases his 64-point lead at the top of the points table.

Behind Mir, it was a enormous scrap for the podium spots with Philipp Oettl coming out on top for his second podium in the class. He hadn’t seen the rostrum since Indianapolis in 2015 and just had enough in the last two sectors of the final lap to keep a three-tenth advantage over Jorge Martin.

The Gresini rider is injured and could barely walk in parc ferme after missing a session on Friday due to the amount of pain he was in. Martin was involved in the scrap for the whole race and managed to keep it together.

Livio Loi stayed ahead of Canet for fourth with Fabio Di Giannantonio in sixth. Gabriel Rodrigo and Adam Norrodin was next along while wildcard Jaume Masia took ninth. The Platinum Bay KTM rider set a new lap record lap 11 as he fought for a podium spot for most of the race, fading late on but he has more than likely got his name on a bike for next season. Enea Bastianini completed the top ten.

Britain’s John McPhee was in the hunt for a podium spot but got wiped out by Bo Bendsneyder at turn one with nine laps to go. The Dutchman was over-ambitious into turn one and just ran into the back of the British Talent Team rider.
