MotoGP Austria: Smith suffers fractured foot

Bradley Smith will take no further part in the AustrianGP after fracturing his foot during Saturday’s MotoE race at the Red Bull Ring.

While the Withu GRT RNF rider managed to navigate the first corner melee of race one unscathed, the new chicane proved his undoing. A highside out of turn 2b brought the Brit down heavily and while he was initially able to walk clear of the incident, albeit with an obvious limp, further investigation at the local hospital diagnosed a fractured fifth metatarsal of his left foot.

The 31-year-old will now undergo rehabilitation to aid his recovery but with Misano just a fortnight away he remains cautious yet optimistic.

"Unfortunately I had a nasty highside at turn 2b on the opening lap," Smith explained from Spielberg. "I'm still scratching my head to what actually went wrong as it was very late on corner exit.

"In the crash I have fractured my 5th metatarsal on my left foot. I'll head back home to work with my medical crew, and keep you updated on a recovery timeline.

"Misano isn't far away... but let's remain optimistic."
