MotoGP Buriram: Rossi, Marquez encourage Carrasco to step up

MotoGP legends Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez have both encouraged Ana Carrasco to move up a class next season after securing her WorldSSP300 title at the Magny-Cours WorldSBK round.

Carrasco made history on Sunday when she became the first-ever woman to win a solo motorcycle road racing world championship. Rossi and Marquez said the Spaniard needs to enjoy her title win and then move up to WorldSSP or Moto2.

“I was very happy. It’s important for the motorcycle world. Already Laia Sainz in the Dakar has shown but this time Ana Carrasco in the road racing has shown it’s not a men’s world, women can be fast as it’s not only about physical strength, skills and mentality are important,” said Marquez.

“She won on a small category and now she needs to do a step. Normally she should move to Supersport or Moto2, I hope so. I hope is a door open for more women.”

Rossi added: “Is for sure a great, great achievement. Is not a victory in one race but a championship so it means she can be strong for all the season. This is good for the future of her career and she can have more good opportunities, and it can push other girls to race.

“For me, MotoGP from the 300 is still a long way for a woman or also a man. I think what is important is when you win a championship is to try and go up for the next season. Try to race with a faster bike in other category like Moto2 or the 600, and try to understand if she can be competitive in the next level.”
