MOTOGP ESTORIL: LORENZO SLASHES ROSSI'S LEAD

Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo has cut team-mate Valentino Rossi's series lead from 30 points to 18 as he crucifed the MotoGP field at Estoril finishing seven seconds ahead of second-placed man Casey Stoner.

The Doctor, who looked totally out of sorts and was lapping a second slower than the Spaniard, could only finish in fourth place behind Dani Pedrosa who took the final podium spot.

Importantly, Stoner appears to be back to full fitness as he was lapping as strongly at the end of the race as he was able to at the start, finishing four seconds ahead of the Repsol Honda man.

Monster Yamaha's Colin Edwards ended the race in fifth place and managed to lap at the same pace as Rossi, while Toni Elias managed to hold off the works Honda of Andrea Dovizioso by 14 one-thousandths of a second.

Pedrosa was off the line first with Lorenzo and Rossi in close attendance, while Stoner barged past Edwards for fourth inside two corners. Lorenzo hit the front halfway through the lap and promptly cleared off.

Stoner got past Pedrosa on lap three and set off in pursuit of Lorenzo, but the Spaniard's pace was too fast. As the top five strang themselves out, Elias made his way through the field.

In unusal turn of events, both the Honda of Alex de Angelis and Loris Capirossi's Rizla Suzuki both broke down, which handed ninth place to Monster Yamah's James Toseland.
