MotoGP Germany: McPhee aiming to ‘dig deep’ with late race pace

Sterilgarda Husqvarna’s John McPhee will line up 13th for the Moto3 German GP after a challenging Saturday at the Sachsenring.

Having gained direct entry to Q2 with the eighth fastest time in FP3, McPhee looked to be on for another strong showing as both he and teammate Ayumu Sasaki sat in the top three as the qualifying session fired up.

A lack of fresh of tyres in the final run, however, proved difficult to better his earlier 1'26.751 pace with the Scot slipping down the standings to 13th by the close of play. The 27-year-old preparing to line up at the head of row five, with Adrian Fernandez and Riccardo Rossi for company in Sunday’s 27-lap race.

“Qualifying was a little bit more difficult today with those conditions,” McPhee admitted from Saxony. “I think it was the same for everyone, of course, but for some reason I struggled more than expected.

“I feel like we have a good pace, I just was not able to make the most in the beginning with the new tyres. Then when the others had two tyres I unfortunately only had one, because we used an extra one in practice, so it was difficult to improve from the earlier laps.

“Anyway we understood the areas we need to work on. The race pace seems good towards the end with the tyre drops, so this is positive. It will be difficult from P13, but we will dig deep tomorrow and try our best.”
