Suzuki Ecstar’s Alex Rins was in action at the Sachsenring on Friday but suffering with his broken left wrist at the anticlockwise circuit.
Two weeks on from fracturing his wrist in the turn one accident at Barcelona, Rins was just half a second off the outright pace as preparations for the German GP got underway. Completing day one 11th in the combined times, his 1’20.591 personal best was just 0.017s behind teammate Joan Mir.
The effort was heroic with the Spaniard suffering a turn one crash at the Chemnitz track halfway through the morning practice and battling pain from the original injury.
“Yeah sincerely I’m feeling so much pain on the left wrist,” Rins admitted on Friday evening. “I was expecting a little bit less but the most difficult thing for me is trying to adapt the pain on the three hard brakes that we have on this circuit.
“In the end, on the left corners I can adapt quite well my hand to the handlebar. But on the three hard brakes, I’m suffering a bit of pain. So I don’t know what we will do tomorrow.
“Already from the first lap on FP1 [I was feeling the pain]” he explained further. “I think the crash comes because the two previous laps were some yellow flags on the first corner so I was pushing but not quite hard and maybe the tyre was a little bit cold. So for this reason I crash but immediately when I touch the floor, I tried to cover my hand to avoid the contact with the gravel.
“For sure I need to rest a little bit. Let’s see how the night goes. If I’m waking up with some power in the hand and some good feelings, for sure I will try to do the FP3 and then let’s decide if we continue or not. But for sure going with a lot of pain, to risk something it’s quite dangerous, no? Maybe the best choice is trying to rest this weekend and goes to Assen that it’s just the next weekend and arrive more prepared. I will decide tomorrow morning.
“Let’s see, depending how I am waking up but for tomorrow we need to do quite a lot of work on FP3, because we need to do the work that we didn’t do today,” he continued. “That is trying to do a lot of laps on the medium compound and on the hard compound for the race. But yeah I think after the FP3 we will see where we are and we will decide something.”
