MotoGP Jerez: ‘Bad tyre’ harms Crutchlow in second session

Britain’s Cal Crutchlow says he fell foul of a bad rear tyre during his final run in the second MotoGP free practice session at Jerez this afternoon which prevented some back to back testing.

The CWM LCR Honda man said that all riders get at least one tyre per weekend that has already been through a heat cycle at a different event and this afternoon, his reared its head and he slipped to seventh on the combined sheet.

“From the morning to the afternoon there is a big shift, this is why we are not too worried. I had a really bad tyre towards the end of the session. It seems we all are getting one tyre per weekend that’s bad but it’s when you want to use it. The teams know, but they didn’t tell me, that it’s pre-heated,” said Crutchlow, speaking at Jerez.

“Basically, it’s been on rim the before at another event, heated up, taken off the rim, put back in the truck and then they bring it back. Everyone will get one, or something like that, from a previous event. So we used ours this afternoon.

“At the start of the session, I put in the used tyre from this morning and I was quite pleased and then I put the hard tyre in and it was a disaster. We couldn’t take anything from this afternoon apart from the first run. We worked through a few things we wanted to work on but we couldn’t test back to back because of the tyre.

“We have to try and get a good result this weekend. I think it will be more difficult but I don’t think it is out of our reach. We are in the same situation as Argentina. On the Friday, both tyres seem not too bad. I think the soft is going to be better. The fight is going to be in qualifying against the super-softs as there are just enough of them left to do some damage, lock out the front row.”
