MotoGP Jerez: ‘Difficult day’ for Marquez, ‘not expecting better’

Marc Marquez had another ‘difficult’ day on the 2022 Repsol Honda with two crashes adding to finishing 19th at Jerez on Friday.

Having initially looked to have a coming together , at least of words, with teammate Pol Espargaro as the afternoon session fired up, the eight-time champion went down at turn six at the halfway stage. Having regrouped to finish the lap and head back to the garage, Marquez fell again three corners later after hitting a damp patch as he attempted to stay off the racing line.

Completing the morning action just adrift of the top ten, the Spaniard’s day went backwards in the final practice with his fastest effort, a 1’38.200, placing him 19th in the combined times, six-tenths behind Espargaro and 1.1s off the outright pace set by Fabio Quartararo.

“It was a very difficult day especially because we take the risk in the afternoon with one bike and one bike a big change” Marquez admitted from his first home GP of the season. “Then with the good bike is the one that I crash, the one that I feel well.

“I crashed in turn six - this was a real crash - then the other crash is a problem that in this circuit is there, that I was out of the line, I was taking care about Binder that he overtook me, and was full of water there after all day with all the raining and is something that they need to fix for the future.

“But we just concentrate again in our garage and let's see if tomorrow we can improve. Apart from those crashes, the feeling overall was not so good. It's true that 20th position is not our position but tomorrow we cannot expect, at the moment, much better. So we will see in the morning if we can keep improving it step by step.”

Refocusing once again, after a challenging run of form with the updated RC213V, Marquez reiterated his plan for Saturday.

“Get again the confidence, this will be the main focus tomorrow, come back to our base, try to take the maximum. I know that is not the base that I like, but is the base what we have until now.”

“Is true that in the morning I feel not so bad but then as soon I want to push more, always I had some warnings, always I'm struggling more and is there where we need to improve a bit and understand. But this we will have time on Monday, now it's time to come back to Portimao bike and find the maximum."
