MotoGP Jerez: Maiden Moto3 win for Oettl after Canet crash chaos

Philipp Oettl has bagged his maiden Moto3 win at the Jerez MotoGP round this morning after an error from Aron Canet saw Jorge Martin, Enea Bastiannini and Tony Arbolino all fall like dominoes at the end of the back straight.

Canet had been making his way through the pack from a poor qualifying position but made a mistake on the brakes into Dry Sac, crashed into the rear of Martin whose Del Conca Gresini then hit Bastiannini who finally wiped out Arbolino. It looks like Martin has damaged his wrist in the incident.

Canet will be summoned to the stewards after the race and, after his Argentina incident with Yurchenko, will get his pants pulled properly down.

At the front, Oettl was left to battle it out with Marco Bezzecchi and managed to hold off the Italian to become one of a very small group of father and son grand prix race winners as dad Peter is a two-time winner.

Alonso Lopez crossed the line in third place and while he was celebrating a home podium, race direction judged him to have exceeded track limits and he was docked one place, pushing Marcos Ramirez into third place.

Britain’s John McPhee was involved in turn two, lap one incident with Lorenzo Dall Porta which saw the pair of them go down.

Bezzecchi takes the championship lead with an eight-point advantage over Martin with Canet still in third place.
