Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo has set the quickest time in the final MotoGP free practice session at Laguna Seca but had to wait until the final ten minutes as the track was completely fog bound.
Because Laguna is high on the Monterey peninsula, mornings can sometimes see mist and fog roll in from the sea and that was the case with only Steve Rapp, Ivan Silva and James Ellison venturing out in the early stages.
Ben Spies was the first factory rider to go out and put in any meaningful laps and he was quickly followed by fellow American Nicky Hayden as they tried to put on a show for their native fans. Spies eventually lapped in 1'22.268 for second but that was blitzed by his Yamaha team-mate, who went round in 1'21.445 from only seven laps.
Ducati's Hayden was third on a 1'22.688 with Britain's Cal Crutchlow bagging fourth with his fifth lap of eight on a 1'23.021. Valentino Rossi was fifth quickest and three-tenths behind the Monster Yamaha man. Stefan Bradl was seventh with Alvaro Bautista seventh.
Randy De Puniet leads the CRT class in eighth with team-mate Aleix Espargaro ninth and the prototype AB Cardion Ducati of the returning Karel Abraham in tenth. Colin Edwards ended in 15th with Ellison one place further back.
Neither Casey Stoner or Dani Pedrosa, who was fastest yesterday, turned a wheel.
