MotoGP Le Mans: Pedrosa heads tight first session

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa just edged ahead of MotoGP title rival Jorge Lorenzo in the opening free practice session this morning at a cold but not wet Le Mans.

The Spaniard had a 0.004s lead over his compatriot as he started his final lap but managed to extend it to 0.04s as the chequered flag came out, posting a 1'34.645 compared to the Yamaha man's 1'34.685, also set on his final lap.

Valentino Rossi was three-tenths behind Pedrosa, coming back from an off-track excursion to put in a 1'34.938 while his team-mate from last year, Nicky Hayden, put the factory Ducati in fourth.

Andrea Dovizioso was fifth, proving the GP13 has at least a fighting chance at this circuit, one place ahead of Monster Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow, himself only half a second slower than the lead man.

Marc Marquez was 0.021s behind Crutchlow at a track he has never seen before with Alvaro Bautista, Stefan Bradl and leading CRT man Hector Barbera rounding out the top ten. Bradley Smith was 15th and 2.1s off the pace.

Aleix Espargaro was second in the CRT class and 11th overall with Randy De Puniet, on the second Aspar Aprilia, one place behind. Britain's Michael Laverty, who has also never ridden here before, was 23rd.
