MotoGP Misano: Fenati wins wet Moto3 crash-fest by 29s

Rivacold Snipers’ Romano Fenati put on a wet weather masterclass in today’s Moto3 race at the Misano MotoGP round, taking victory by 29s from championship leader Joan Mir and Fabio Di Giannantonio in third as 19 riders crashed in sketchy conditions.

The Italian was unstoppable, kept his head and found grip where others were falling, especially at turns one and six when riders were going down in a straight line.

Only 15 riders finished the race in Italy with Fenati lapping as much as two seconds faster than the rest of the pack and a pitlane theory is that a change in air pressure meant many riders ended up with over-inflated tyres providing not enough grip.

Championship leader Mir played the damage limitation game, doing everything he needed to to take points, losing five to Fenati but strengthening his grip on the trophy as the number of points available drops to 125 before the season ends.

The biggest loser was Aron Canet who crashed out of fourth with three left to run and that was the end of his title challenge as he is now 84 points behind Mir with only five races left to run.

espite a couple of off-track moments, Philipp Oettl claimed fourth place with Nico Bulega taking his SKY VR46 bike to fifth place. Bo Bendsneyder crashed with 17 laps to run but still managed to fight his way back to sixth place.

Jakub Kornfiel also crashed, and was given a one-place penalty for overtaking under a yellow but bagged seventh. Albert Arenas, Andrea Migno and Jaume Masia completed the top ten.

Britain’s John McPhee went down with 16 laps to go and said that he was off the throttle mid-turn but the engine braking caused him to lose the rear.

Amazingly, Enea Bastiannini crashed twice but still got 14th place after Patrik Pulkkinen was disqualifed after not crossing the line within five minutes of the chequered flag. He went down on the last lap and pushed to the end.
