MotoGP Misano: Medium front tyre choice behind Lorenzo’s crash

Jorge Lorenzo said that circumstances dicated d he had no choice but to use the medium front Michelin tyre and it was the reason he crashed out of second place during today’s MotoGP race in Misano.

The Spaniard had started closing the gap on his team-mate and was looking like he may catch him on the final lap, however it all went wrong for Lorenzo when he lost the front end of his GP18 at turn eight and he slid into the gravel.

The factory Ducati man said that the increased temperatures and subsequently needing to use the medium front tyre was the reason behind the crash.

“It was more to have to use the medium-medium that normally I don’t like, especially the front,” said Lorenzo when asked about the crash.

“I didn’t have any grip on the side. I didn’t have good grip in the middle of the tyre at the front and rear to stop the bike. This made me stop the bike using a lot of brake the entire race, I was closing and closing.

“Choosing this tyre make me have a lot of troubles during all the race.”

Today’s track temperature was 41 degrees and despite similarly high temperatures during last months test, Lorenzo was forced to use the medium. He did however say that he believes he would’ve had more than Dovi and Marquez had he been able to run the soft front.

“With softer tyres I think I would have had something more for Dovi and Marc,” he said.

“But with the medium tyres, the pace was very similar for the three riders. I think especially in the second part of the race, both Ducati riders had more than Marc. But Marc had my wheel to keep there, especially in the last part of the race when I was pushing and I had more confidence.

“I was going to high 32s, because before I didn’t feel too comfortable, I was 33.1, 33.0. But these two keys, the obligation to choose medium-medium made me not fast today, and also the fight with Marc.

“Just one degree more of lean angle, the front didn’t support my braking. So I think it was this, the impossibility to choose the soft front tyre that made me crash today and not go fast.”
