Inde GasGas Aspar’s Jake Dixon was firmly in the Moto2 mix as the San Marino GP prepared at Misano World Circuit on Friday.
Setting the fifth fastest time of the opening day, a 1’36.692, Dixon staked his claim on the front group, and a potential Q2 position, ahead of a weekend of temperamental weather.
Just over a tenth separated the Brit from Celestino Vietti’s session-leading effort as the intensely matched intermediate class saw the top 21 riders all within a second by the close of the two 40-minute practices.
“It was a productive day,” Dixon said of his free practice schedule. “Although we don't have the best feelings, it wasn't bad and we finished fifth.
“We are going to continue working and we will see what we can do tomorrow.”
