MotoGP Misano: Rossi chases Bautista in patchy final practice

San Carlo Honda's Alvaro Bautista topped the final MotoGP free practice timesheets at Misano this morning in a patchy session which started soaking wet but dried enough for slicks to be wheeled out with ten minutes left to run.

The Spaniard was chased, though, by Ducati's Valentino Rossi on his home circuit but the Italian was still a second behind the Honda man who set his quickest time of a 1'42.393 with only a few minutes on the clock.

Rossi was directly behind Bautista on the track and popped in a 1'43.452 with his final circuit, almost two seconds ahead of championship leader Jorge Lorenzo, on the factory Yamaha, with challenger Dani Pedrosa in fourth and another seven-tenths in arrears.

Pedrosa's Repsol Honda team-mate Jonathan Rea has lost out once again as he only got 13 laps in, most of them in the damp, and will go into this afternoon's qualifying session almost blind if it is fully wet or dry. He finished in 15th place and 6.2 seconds in arrears.

Andrea Dovizioso bagged fifth with his final lap and he had CRT man Danilo Petrucci behind him in sixth. LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl was seventh, Michele Pirro eighth, Aleix Espargaro ninth and Nicky Hayden, who is still carrying a hand injury from Indianapolis, tenth.

Britain's Cal Crutchlow put in ten laps and ended just ahead of Yamaha stablemate Ben Spies in 11th. Colin Edwards finished in 16th with James Ellison not classified after he did an out lap on slicks and thought better of it.
