Scotland’s John McPhee bagged his first-ever Moto3 front row during qualifying at today’s Motegi MotoGP round, getting a great tow from the Estrella Galicia pair of Alexes Marquez and Rins to join poleman Danny Kent in the upper echelons.
The Oban rider hauled himself up from a disappointing Friday and only setting the 15th quickest time in third free practice to his best qualifying slot ever and says now he needs to just get away with the lead pack in tomorrow’s race.
“We had a good strategy and timed it perfectly to get a slipstream. Everything is working well, the bike is feeling good and my confidence is on the up and I am happy,” said McPhee, speaking at Motegi.
“Yesterday was a bit of a disaster and we were near the back. We had some problems and I wasn’t all that confident going into qualifying today but now I am really looking forward to tomorrow. It’s difficult to have a strategy for the race, just get away with the front group, have a clean race and fight for it at the end.”
