Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo has set the fastest time in MotoGP free practice one at Mugello this afternoon lapping just a fraction faster than team-mate Valentino Rossi.
The Spaniard was the only rider to get into the 1'49s bracket with a 1'49.870 while The Doctor was two one-hundredths of a second slower and Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner rounds off a provisional front row with a 1'50.144
Rossi was fastest at the top of the session with a 1'50.573 which no-one got near until 20 minutes had elapsed and Stoner popped in a 1'50.525 to take the lead.
Lorenzo then began a string of laps which saw him climb slowly up the sheet and on the half-hour, he put in 1'50.409 lap. Stoner was out on track at the same time and immediately bettered it with a 1'50.144, which was best the Aussie could do.
Rossi went quickest with 15 minutes left to go but he could do nothing about Lorenzo's pace as the Spaniard did another run of laps and set his quickest time with ten minutes of the session left.
Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa is fourth fastest on a 1'50.808 with Colin Edwards just behind and Alex De Angelis rounds out a theoretical second row with his 1'50.989 lap.
Britain's James Toseland had got up as as far as ninth on the timesheets, but quick laps at the end of the session by Marco Melandri and Loris Capirossi, among others, saw him demoted to 11th.
