Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez has revealed he jumped off his RC213V at 170mph before it hit the wall that runs down the left-hand side of Mugello's start/finish straight in order to avoid serious injury.
The Spanish wunderkind locked his front brake at which caused the rear to step sideways and the reigning Moto2 Champion was left with no option but to bail out. His quick thinking left him with just a strained neck and other cuts and bruises.
“Just after the hill on the straight I grabbed for the brakes but I closed the front. I tried to save it but the bike was pulling me towards the wall so I jumped from the bike to avoid hitting it," said Marquez, who estimated he was doing 280km/h.
"I hit my chin hard and strained my neck quite badly, I also have some contusions to my right shoulder, arm and leg but other than that I'm ok. Thanks to all the medical team that were quickly on the scene to assist me. Now I need to rest and see how I feel later tonight and in the morning.”
