Mattia Pasini continued his good form around Mugello as he secured his first pole position of 2018.
The Italian posted his fastest time of the session, a 1’51.575, in the middle of the 45-minute session and it was never topped with the circuit lacking grip due to the high track temperatures with the track nearly reaching 50 degrees.
German Marcel Schrotter and Estrella Galicia 0,0 rider Marc VDS rider Alex Marquez will round join Pasini on the front row with just 0.067 seconds covering the front row.
World Championship leader Pecco Bagnaia will start from the head of the second row on his Sky Racing VR46 Kalex with fellow Italians Simone Corsi and Romano Fenati joining him on the second row of the grid.
Luca Marini benefitted from following his team-mate to finish seventh with another Italian in the form of Lorenzo Baldassarri and his Pons HP40 machine meaning six of the top eight are Italians at their home circuit with MotoGP-bound Joan Mir only managing to ninth despite being just 0.525 seconds off the pole man.
Jorge Navarro was one of a few riders to improve his time late in the session and he will start from tenth position with Miguel Oliveira and Xavi Vierge only fast enough to earn starting spots from the fourth row.
Tetsuta Nagashima will head the fifth row with the Japanese rider joined by a pair of Brits, with Sam Lowes and Danny Kent starting in fourteenth and fifteenth respectively.
Kent’s Speed Up team-mate Fabio Quartararo will start one place behind his team-mate, with Andrea Locatelli, Khairul Idham Pawi and Brad Binder meaning the 19 riders are all covered by just 0.850 seconds.
