MotoGP Mugello: The speed is there – Dovizioso

Factory Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso said that ‘the speed is there’ despite qualifying on the third row of the grid for tomorrow's Mugello MotoGP.

Last year’s Italian Grand Prix winner was just over three tenths off pole sitter Valentino Rossi’s fastest lap and despite that only being good enough for seventh position, the Italian is confident after a displaying good race pace in FP4.

“When you have the pace we did in FP4, you have to be happy. I was third and I was able to keep a good lap time until the end when the tyre was very used,” said Dovizioso.

“In this case I went to a used set up which is important to know for the race. I’m working always for the race, not to be fast for the practice. But the time we have is not enough and when you lose the Friday like I did, it’s even less. We couldn’t fix the limit we have, but we are very close, the speed is there.”

Despite his own pace, Dovizioso is aware of the pace that the other riders have and is ready to fight with Lorenzo, Marquez and some of the other Italians up the sharp end of the grid.

“There are some other riders with really good pace, so I think could be a really nice fight tomorrow with many riders. A lot of Italians but some other riders will be strong like Jorge and like Marc,” he said.

Dovi explained that a limit on the amount of soft tyres he had left, meant he was limited to what he could do during FP3 as he had to save his final soft tyre to ensure he would get into the top ten and subsequently go straight through to Q2.

“I had to work with the medium because I had only one soft remaining to do all my work. I used the soft to tyre and get in the top ten and I used that in free practice to see my pace so at the end its good,” he said.

“We are still working a little but we are there and the pace is there, we’re less than three tenths from the pole position so this is really good.”
